This is an unassembled kit containing parts for making an Openflexure Microscope v7. The Openflexure Microscope is a customizable, open-source optical microscope. It can be built using either low-cost webcam optics or laboratory-grade RMS-threaded microscope objectives. The system uses an inverted optical geometry and a high-precision mechanical stage, which can be motorized using low-cost geared stepper motors.

Unique characteristics

The Openflexure Microscope is designed to ensure accessibility for users with varying levels of technical expertise. A clear interface, logical navigation, and integrated contextual guidance support efficient operation and rapid familiarization, enabling users to perform essential tasks with confidence and precision.

Fully Digital System with Integrated Software

The microscope incorporates embedded software that enables image acquisition, data storage, and on-site processing directly within the device. This self-contained digital architecture eliminates the continuous need for an external computer and supports reliable operation across laboratory, educational, and field-based environments.

Fully programmable and automatable

Openflexure supports advanced programmability and automated workflows through existing control software. These capabilities include automated image capture, processing, and precise stage movement across samples.

Easily modifiable and adaptable to specific application areas

Additional mechanical or optical components can be easily added to the microscope, providing flexibility for research use. Thanks to its compact size, the microscope can be placed inside an incubator, enabling Live Cell Imaging for various tasks in cell biology and microbiology.

The Kit includes:

A charger;

A Dust-bag;

Cables:

  • For direct microscope control from a computer.
  • For streaming to a projector, screen, or interactive whiteboard.
  • For connecting to outdated display devices.

Design features

 This design for a 3D printed microscope stage uses plastic flexures, meaning its motion is free from friction and vibration. It achieves steps well below 100 nanometers when driven with miniature stepper motors, and is stable to within a few microns over several days.

Easy to source, quick to assemble

Designed for real-world use, the microscope is lightweight, USB-powered, and field-ready. It has been deployed in over 60 countries - from polar research stations to rural clinics - and supports public health initiatives, point-of-care diagnostics, and citizen science outreach. Its global recognition and proven utility make it an ideal investment for forward-thinking universities and institutions seeking to expand both access and innovation in science education.

Lab-ready customization

The optics module (containing the camera and lens) can be easily swapped out or modified, for example to change the magnification/resolution by using a microscope objective.

Optional filter cubes can be printed, allowing for reflection (epi-) illumination, polarization-contrast microscopy, and even fluorescence imaging.
